Top Tips for Finding Free Piano and Keyboard Sheet Music… and for Buying Piano Music Online
1. The Basics – So What Is Piano Sheet Music?
Piano sheet music is simply music that has been notated on paper, rather than in an audio form. It can be in the form of a book, or simply as separate sheets, which can often be downloaded in a printable format from the Internet, sometimes for free, or for purchase.
Sheet music for piano can include many different music styles from pop to classical to jazz. Many modern pop and rock songs are arranged into piano transcripts, which are simplified to suit pianists of different levels. Recent films, shows or record albums are often published in commercial and free piano sheets form, especially for the piano, which is one of the most popular instruments.
2. How Do I Find Free Printable Piano Sheet Music On The Web – Or Do I Need To Buy It?
Piano arrangements that are public domain (meaning that there are no copyright licence restrictions) are often freely available on the Internet. The best way to find these is to use a search engine using the title of the piano piece or song, and including the words ‘free printable sheet music for piano‘.
You may also find it useful to use a search engine’s ‘Image’ search function, for example from Google. As long as your title is fairly well known, you should find a fair amount of free piano sheet music in a piano sheet pdf form that is easily printable in the image results returned.
No luck with the search engines? You may have to bite the bullet and buy your piano sheet music at a respectable music supplier. Take a browse through the popular piano sheet music suppliers available on the web.
3. What About Piano Music Copyright?
If you have found a website that offers downloads of FREE printable piano music, make sure that you check the music for copyright notices, which are usually found at the bottom of the sheet music. If there is a copyright notice which doesn’t correspond with the website, then there’s a good change that the website is breaking copyright law… which you will also be breaking if you download the ‘pirated’ sheet music.
Bear in mind that composers and musicians rely on copyright to protect their work (and pay their wages!), so please think twice about sites that contain illegally copied piano sheet music.
Even if there is no copyright notice at the bottom of the piano sheet music, the download may still be infringing copyright. For example, it is quite likely that a free download of a piano arrangement such as Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’ is illegal, unless the publisher has granted a licence to the distributor which should be visible on the music.
So it’s always best to check – is the free piano sheet music you want to download actually legal?
4. Original or Popular Sheet Music?
Many people like to play piano arrangements of well-known songs, rather than learning a piece nobody has heard of before. However, the problem with quite a few arrangements of popular tunes is that the piano sheet music is sometimes rather complicated and hard to play.
For that reason, it’s well worth taking a look at original piano music (such as the freebie piano sheet music here at My-Music-Room.com!), because some composers offer a large repertoire of fun and comparatively straight-forward piano music, that also sounds great.
As an added bonus, many piano composers will also offer some or all of their printable piano sheet music for free just to get their name and material better known.
5. How Do You Know The Difficulty Level Of Piano Sheet Music?
Piano music comes in all levels of difficulty – from absolute beginner to pieces for highly advanced and experienced players. This is where the ‘Grades’ system comes in…
Piano grades are examinations (both practical and theoretical), which assess a student’s piano playing ability in a number of areas. In the UK, grades are numbered from 1 (beginner) to 8 (advanced), where Grade 8 is one of the usual entry requirements for a student who wants to continue their music study at a music college or other further education organisation.
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is the largest and most well-known examination board in the world, and most piano pieces are ‘graded’ according to their standards.
It’s important to match the grade standard of any sheet music you find to your own ability level. A good distributer of free piano sheet music (or for sheet music for purchase) will always indicate the grade level.
6. Buying Piano Sheet Music – Some Suggested Dos and Don’ts…
Several of the websites listed above allow you to purchase piano sheet music both in downloadable printable form and in mail-order book form. However, before you buy, make sure you know what you’re buying!
You should first be able to listen to the piano music and know the grade level of the sheet music. When it comes to checking out, paying by PayPal is usually a safe method to buy your sheet music, and if the music is a download, it should be delivered to you or your email inbox straight away.
Again, be careful to check that you are not buying an illegal copy of a piano piece. There are quite a few unscrupulous websites out there and it may not be free piano sheet music that they are offering!
7. Are Piano Sheet Music Backing Tracks Useful?
Increasingly these days, you’ll find piano sheet music for free or for puchase that comes with a backing track to play along with. This provides excellent musicianship and tempo practice because you will have to listen to the backing track at the same time as playing the music!
Practising like this will also get you into a good habit of ‘keeping going’ which will help your performance skills (how many times have you heard a pianist ‘perform’ a piece but keep stopping, much to the annoyance of the audience?).
With a backing track, you won’t be able to stop and correct any small mistakes you might have made – don’t worry about them, just keep going (and practice those bars SLOWLY afterwards!)
Please note, that if you have learnt a piano piece well, then playing with a backing track at the correct tempo should be fairly straightforward. For many people though, it takes a fairly long time to get a piece up to that tempo and standard. But with practice you’ll get there!
Some websites like My-Music-Room.com offer practice-backing tracks at much slower tempos. This means that even if you are only at the stage where you can only play the piece at a slower speed, you can still benefit and have fun by playing along with a backing track.
Of course, the best thing about playing with a backing track is that it sounds great and is excellent fun to play along with!
8. Piano Sheet Music – The Performance Audio Track
Any piano sheet music website or publisher worth their salt will offer a performance audio recording of the piano piece that you’ll be able to listen to. This really helps when learning a piano piece, as you will be able to hear how the music should be played, with the various dynamics, articulations, rhythms and ‘feeling’ that every piece of music should have.
Being able to ‘copy’ a performance in this way (‘by ear’) is a very effective practising and learning aid.
